CRASH ON HIGHWAY 107 RESULTS IN FATALITY
JONESBOROUGH – Washington County Sheriff’s Deputies have charged Alfonso Vasquez-Morales, 33 of Kingsport, with Vehicular Homicide by Intoxication.
According to Sheriff Keith Sexton, Deputies responded to a crash Highway 107 near Jackson Bridge shortly after 2 p.m. on Tuesday, July 7. The crash investigation revealed that a vehicle driven by Vasquez-Morales crossed into the opposite lane of travel and struck a motorcycle head on. The driver was thrown off of the motorcycle, which resulted in fatal injuries.
William Richard Sauer, 69, of Brooksville, Florida, died on scene as a result of injuries sustained in the crash.
Moments before the crash, a call to 911 resulted in a Be On the Look Out (BOLO) for the vehicle. The caller told 911 that the vehicle Vasquez-Morales was driving almost hit a car head on near Nolichucky Fire Department.
Witnesses told Deputies that Vasquez-Morales was weaving in and out of traffic prior to the crash. Vasquez-Morales admitted to Deputies on scene he consumed “six or seven beers” prior to driving.
In addition to the Vehicular Homicide charge, Deputies also charged him with the following:
• Driving on Right Side of the Roadway
• No Driver’s License
• Reckless Driving
• Financial Responsibility Law
• Introduction of Contraband into a Penal Facility
• Possession of Methamphetamine
Upon arriving at the Washington County Detention Center, Deputies found a small amount of methamphetamine wrapped in cellophane in his front pocket. His bond was set at $125,000. However, Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) did place a hold on Vasquez-Morales.
Vasquez-Morales will appear in court today, July 8. The investigation is ongoing by the WCSO’s Crash Reconstruction Team. More charges may be forthcoming.
