The primary function of the Criminal Investigation Division is to conduct follow-up investigations of criminal offenses resulting in the eventual identification, apprehension, and successful prosecution of criminal offenders. The Criminal Investigation Division is responsible for overseeing the Sheriff's Office Victim/Witness Program, the Criminal Intelligence function, and the Vice and Organized Crime function.

The Criminal Investigation Division is commanded by Captain Shawn Judy, and in addition to the investigators who work conventional cases, the investigators assigned to the 1st Judicial District Drug Task Force and the Organized Crime and Drug Enforcement Task Force operate under his supervision, along with the Juvenile Operations Investigators
