The Community Services crews take inmates
from the Washington County Detention Center out to various areas of the
county in order to pickup roadside litter and illegal dump sites on public
property. These inmates are carefully selected by a process which looks
at the inmates charges, criminal history, and behavior, while incarcerated.

Each Year Washington County receives funding from the Tennessee Department of Transportation Litter Grant Program. These funds are used for litter collection, education and direct costs associated with the roadside litter program.
During the past three years, the litter crews have retrieved an average of 860,000 pounds of roadside litter, tires and illegally discarded items from county and state roadways throughout Washington County, Tennessee.
